Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin will take part online in the third  Summit for Democracy held in South Korea on Wednesday, according to an informed source.

The summit’s theme is ‘Democracy for Future Generations’. The summit’s plenary session will be held virtually on the evening of Wednesday. The Thai prime minister will deliver a three-minute speech at the plenary session along with other leaders from the so-called democratic countries.

The three-day summit began on Monday with a ministerial conference and a roundtable discussion on “Technology and Democracy.”

The second day will focus on the role of civil society and youth organizations in their effort to shape the future of democracy.

Srettha’s speech will focus on the democratization in Thailand. He led an elected government comprised of various political parties after the May election last year. Since then, the country’s international profile has changed for the better as it is no longer associated with the military-led government.

The US did not invite Thailand to attend the previous two summits in 2022 and 2023. At the time, Washington viewed Thailand, one of the US allies in the Indo-Pacific, as a non-democratic country because of the military’s power seizure in 2014.

 Thailand held a general election in 2019 but some of the Western countries were reluctant to treat the country as a democracy.
