Several houses in Khok Sung district in Thailand’s eastern province of Sa Kaeo were damaged this morning after Cambodian troops fired rockets and artillery rounds onto civilian areas as fighting between Thai and Cambodian forces continued for a 16th day.
One house caught fire and was completely destroyed. No casualties have been reported.
Most residents had already been evacuated to safer areas under orders from the Thai military.
People living in the districts of Aranyaprathet, Khok Sung, Ta Phraya and Khlong Hat in Sa Kaeo province were ordered yesterday to evacuate to shelters or safer areas as border tensions escalated.
Thai military sources said Cambodian forces began shelling non-military targets with BM-21 rockets, artillery and mortar rounds in Khok Sung, Ta Phraya and Aranyaprathet districts before dawn today, prompting the Thai military to respond with artillery and mortar fire.
A Thai Air Force F-16 fighter jet provided air support by targeting suspected Cambodian military installations in Ban Bung Takuan, in Cambodia’s Banteay Meanchey province, opposite Ta Phraya district, at about 5am today.
