Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet reports that he has recently met with a professor, who was key member of Cambodia’s legal team during the country’s case against Thailand at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in 2013, seeking interpretation of the 1962 Preah Vihear Temple judgement.
Hun Manet shared a photo on his Facebook page, showing him shaking hands with Professor Jean-Marc Sorel, and revealed that they had reviewed and discussed Cambodia’s submission to the ICJ concerning four sites, over which Cambodia and Thailand are currently in dispute.
He claimed that Cambodia continues to pursue the case under the World Court’s jurisdiction, seeking a peaceful resolution based on international law.
Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia have been escalating since a fatal clash between troops from both countries in late May.
The situation intensified after Cambodia released an audio recording of a conversation between the Thai Prime Minister and Cambodia’s former Prime Minister Hun Sen.
In the recording, the Thai Prime Minister is heard criticising a Thai military commander, describing him as “an opponent”. Her tone during the conversation with Hun Sen is also being seen by critics as too conciliatory.
Following the leak, both countries ordered the closure of their shared border, impacting cross-border trade and people’s movement.
