Thailand’s Second Army Region has accused Cambodian troops of behaving like bandits, by allegedly stealing surveillance equipment and cutting the barbed wire of the border fence, near the Ta Khwai ancient temple ruins in Phanom Dong Rak district of Surin province.
To support the accusation, the army released a video on its Facebook page showing Cambodian troops in the act of cutting the barbed wire, about 3km to the east of the ruins. The incident took place at about 11.45pm on Friday night.
Thai troops were sent to the spot today to investigate and it was discovered that barbed wire had been cut in several places along the border fence. It has now been repaired.
The Second Army Region explained that there is no conflict between Thailand and Cambodian over the area where the barbed wire was cut, which is why surveillance devices were installede instead of deploying troops on regular patrols.
After the incident on Friday night, the army said that patrolling of the area will be resumed and a complaint will be lodged against Cambodia via the Interim Observer Team (Thailand).
