Cambodia’s National Defence Ministry has admitted that its army personnel accidentally fired two shots along the Thai-Cambodian border recently.
Notwithstanding, the ministry’s spokeswoman, Lt Gen Maly Socheata, denied reports, on the Thai Army’s Facebook page and in Thai media, that Cambodian forces fired three small-calibre rounds into Thai territory
The Thai Army’s Facebook page said the gunfire, opposite Pa Man Base in Kantharalak District of Thailand’s Si Sa Ket province, was apparently to test Thai forces’ reaction.
The Cambodian Military Region 4’s report claimed that the Cambodian Army unit stationed in the area accidentally discharged only two rounds at 1.20pm.
Communication teams from both nations have since discussed the matter and resolved it, Socheata said in a statement.
She also reaffirmed Cambodia’s commitment to cooperating with Thailand at all levels, to promote peace, stability, cooperation and development for the benefit of both countries.
The Thai Army maintains, though, that the shooting was a clear violation of the ceasefire.
