Thailand has no choice but to respond to what it regards as exploitation and attacks by Cambodia, necessitating the taking of actions which the Thai side has long tried to avoid," said Thai Army spokesman Maj Gen Winthai Suvaree on Thursday.
He said it has now become clear that Cambodia is the one pushing Thailand into a corner, leaving it with no choice but to respond.
He was speaking after tensions escalated today, with troops on both sides of the border exchanging gunfire, following months of tension and sporadic conflict.
Maj Gen Winthai referred to the activation of ‘Operation Chakraphong Phuvanaat’, a national defence plan that outlines the roles and readiness of various military units, to be implemented upon command, saying that the plan has been carefully reviewed, based on current threats and conditions, in line with the Thai Army’s national defence responsibilities.
The spokesman said that the plan was used during the Preah Vihear standoff, and that Thailand’s current combat readiness has since improved significantly, with adjustments made to counter evolving threats and to match the capabilities of opposing forces.
He insisted that morale among Thai soldiers remains high and that all personnel are committed to their duties. “We are aware of the risks. Such attacks are unacceptable, but they only serve to strengthen our resolve,” he said. “Thailand will not allow itself to be taken advantage of or targeted in this way.”
He added that Thailand has always respected international laws and norms, but the current situation shows that Cambodia is the one applying pressure.
“From this point forward, we may be forced to do things we have long tried to avoid, even if they involve mechanisms of international engagement. At this point, anything can happen,” he warned.
The spokesman called on Thai citizens to stand behind the military, especially those stationed on the front lines.
“Under this growing pressure, we continue to act within international frameworks. Please have confidence in the capability of the Thai Army. Now more than ever, our frontline troops need your support,” he concluded.
