Thai Supreme Court suspends Deputy Education Minister

The Supreme Court accepted a petition today (Friday), filed by the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) against Deputy Education Minister Kanokwan Vilawan, for an alleged serious violation of or non-compliance with ethical standards related to forest encroachment.

The case relates to the issuance of land title deeds in the Muang district of Prachin Buri province. It is alleged that the land was purchased in 1990 from a “Mr. Thew Malisorn”, who did not exist. The land is located in Khao Yai National Park and the Khao Yai permanent forest boundary. Serious damage allegedly resulted from this issuance the title deeds, which Kanokwan had owned until taking a position in the Education Ministry.

The court accepted the petition and sent a copy and supporting documents to Kanokwan, who can file an objection within 14 days. She was ordered to cease her duties as a deputy minister until the court reaches its decision.

The first hearing is scheduled at 9am on October 5th.
