Thai Police seize about 1.6 billion baht of illicit drugs in Kanchanaburi province

Thai police, in the western province of Kanchanaburi, yesterday seized a massive haul of illicit drugs concealed in a 12-wheel trailer truck. The drugs have an estimated street value of 1.6 billion baht.

Pol Gen Chakthip Chaijinda, the National Police Chief, told a news conference today that the seizure includes 1,385kgs of Ice (crystal methamphetamine), 77kgs of heroin and 500kgs of Ketamine.

He said that the drugs were hidden in specially-built compartments under the floor of the truck, adding that the haul is the biggest ever seized in the province.

The truck’s driver, 59-year old Sakchai Kaerod, was held in police custody after his vehicle was stopped at a checkpoint in Thong Pha Poom district.

Sakchai claimed that he was hired, for a fee of 150,000 baht, to drive the truck from the Three Pagoda Pass in Sangkhla Buri district to Nakhon Pathom province.
