Thai PM urged to find ways to prevent collapse of House meetings

House Speaker Chuan Leekpai has urged Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha to meet with leaders of coalition parties to discuss ways to prevent the collapse of House meetings.

He also urged all MPs to attend the meetings, so that bills pending in the House can be processed before the end of the parliamentary term on March 23rd.

Citing the current political uncertainty, Chuan said that he has no idea if or when the House will be dissolved by the prime minister before the end of its four-year term.

The collapse of House meetings has, of late, has become more frequent, with both government and opposition parties blaming each other for the disruptions.

On Constitutional Day today (Saturday), House Speaker Chuan said that, over the past three plus years, parliament has performed its legislative duty quite satisfactorily, with numerous pieces of legislation having been passed, albeit with some disruptions due to the lack of quorums.

With three days of House meetings left before the end of this year, he said that he hopes both the government and opposition parties will attend the meetings to deliberate and vote on several pending bills.

Chuan said that he is optimistic that the remaining meetings this year will be smooth and less problematic, after the meeting on Thursday proceeded unimpeded, following an instruction from Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam.
