Human rights lawyer jailed for lèse majesté

A Thai Criminal Court jailed a human rights lawyer for four years today (Tuesday) for insulting the monarchy.

Anon Nampa, 39, was convicted under the country’s controversial lèse majesté laws over a speech he made during a demonstration in Bangkok in 2020.

The Bangkok Criminal Court ruled that Anon’s address to a group of protesters at the Democracy Monument on October 14th, 2020 amounted to an act of lèse majesté, as defined by the law.

Anon was also fined Bt20,000 for violating an emergency decree in effect at the time.
