Supreme Administrative Court to consider constituency boundary changes

Thailand’s Supreme Administrative Court has agreed to consider complaints from political parties over the Election Commission’s (EC) remapping of constituency boundaries in Bangkok, Sukhothai and Sakhon Nakhon provinces.

Atavit Suwanpakdee, secretary-general of Chart Pattana Kla Party, said today (Friday) that the Supreme Administrative Court has accepted the party’s complaint regarding remapping of constituency boundaries in Bangkok.

He said that, according to the election law, an entire district must be in the same constituency, but noted that, in the case of Bangkok’s 33 constituencies, there are only four constituencies where the boundaries remain unchanged, raising suspicions that the EC might have intentionally changed the boundaries of the other constituencies “with hidden agenda”.

There are also complaints against constituency boundary remapping in Sukhothai and Sakhon Nakhon provinces.

The Supreme Administrative Court is waiting for an explanation from the EC before it deliberates the cases, with its rulings expected before the May 14th general election.

Some political parties are concerned that the change of constituency boundaries may affect their support base.
