Two defence volunteers were killed and two others were injured by insurgents, while they were exercising in front of their base in Mai Kaen district of Pattani province today.
According to an initial report, three motorcycles, carrying six insurgents, passed through the base at about 5.45pm. The three pillion passengers opened fire with handguns and assault rifles before speeding away.
Southern insurgents have stepped up their attacks on members of the security forces and government officials, after they were condemned by human rights organisations and Muslim clerics for their deadly attacks on civilians.
One novice monk and several innocent people, including a girl, have been murdered in the indiscriminate attacks.
