Two defence volunteers, killed while on duty in an attack in Narathiwat’s Sungai Kolok district on Saturday night, are being hailed as heroes.
At around 7.10pm, a group of assailants arrived at the front of the Sungai Kolok district office and opened fire, in an attempt to break in.
According to Radio Thailand’s Sungai Kolok Facebook page, another group of assailants lobbed grenades at the defence volunteers, who returned fire.
The grenades killed father of two Muhammad Sabri Naswan at the scene and injured his team members.
Meanwhile, defence volunteer Tossapon Paipim, who was buying food when the gunfire and explosions erupted, rushed back to the district office. As he approached an intersection, near a temple, he encountered a group of assailants. He exchanged gunfire with the attackers before being shot.
The assailants then fled the scene.
Passers-by rushed to help Tossapon, but he succumbed to his wounds. According to the Facebook page, his last words were, "I can’t take it anymore."
Tossapon was a widower father of four.
