A mother was killed and her police officer husband injured when they were attacked by four insurgents disguised as women wearing hijabs near a school in Yarang district of Pattani yesterday.
The Internal Security Operations Command of the Fourth Army later condemned the broad daylight gun attack as inhuman and a serious violation of religious principles, noting that the victims were a family travelling with a baby in the same car.
Police said the couple, Pol. Snr. Sgt. Maj. Adul Hayisulong and his wife, Fatimo Ya-ngoh, a teacher at Prasarn Wittaya School, were travelling in the same car with their newborn baby in her arms on their way to pick up another child from the school.
As they waited in the car near the school, four insurgents disguised as women in hijabs and riding two motorcycles approached the vehicle from both sides and opened fire with handguns.
Both Adul and Fatimo were injured in the attack, while the baby escaped unharmed. The victims were rushed to the district hospital for treatment, but Fatimo was pronounced dead on arrival.
