Search on after 20 fishing boats capsize in stormy seas off Nakhon Si Thammarat

Search and rescue operations were launched today (Sunday) in the Gulf of Thailand, off the southern province of Nakhon Si Thammarat, for an unknown number of fishermen and tourists following the capsizing of about 20 boats during a freak storm.

It is reported that a storm sent large waves rushing toward the coasts of Pak Phanang, Mueang and Tha Sala districts.

About 20 small fishing boats at sea at the time were struck by the high waves and strong winds and capsized. A few, which had been hired by tourists on fishing trips, also capsized.

Five men were plucked from the stormy seas, but a number of others are still missing.

Nakhon Si Thammarat Governor Apinan Puakpong is reported to have gone to Pak Phanang district to supervise the rescue operations.

Meanwhile, in the neighbouring province of Surat Thani, a ferry from the Racha Ferry Company, shuttling between Samui Island and Don Sak pier on mainland Surat Thani, sank at the pier when the vessel hit a concrete pole after being struck by strong waves.

The crash opened a gaping hole in the vessel allowing seawater in. The vessel gradually listed and sank.

Fortunately, the accident happened after the ferry had unloaded its passengers and cars.

Governor Witchawut Jinto later ordered marine officials to prevent all vessels from leaving shore until the storm eases.

In the meantime, four crew from a fishing boat were rescued from the rough seas off Samui Island, after their vessel sank in heavy seas.

Another fishing boat is also reported to have sunk and its crew is still missing.
