One student was injured in a clash between rivals from two technology institutes on the Pathumwan skywalk in Bangkok’s Pathumwan district Monday evening.

Pathumwan police said that about 40 rival students each from the Pathumwan Institute of Technology and the Rajamangala University of Technology Tawan-ok, Uthenthawai campus, got into a fist fight on the skywalk, near the MBK shopping mall, at about 5.50pm. The disorder prompted the management to close access to and from the Mall, to keep everything and everyone inside safe.

Police rushed to the scene after receiving a report from traffic officers in the area. They managed to separate the two groups of students and ordered them to go back to their respective institutes, which are located not far from each other.

A police officer said that the skywalk is a regular gathering place for students from both institutes and they often clash.

In last November, a student from the Rajamangala University and a teacher from Sacred Heart Convent School in Khlong Toei were killed by students from the Pathumwan Institute of Technology.

The suspected shooter and over a dozen former and current students from the institute have been arrested by the police, mostly on charges of criminal association.

The ongoing rivalry between the two vocational colleges dates back several decades, without a solution in sight.
