Ratchaprarop intersection in Bangkok closed due to subsidence

A pickup truck sustained damage when its two front wheels fell into a huge hole in the road at a junction on Ratchaprarop Road, after a section of the road subsided at about 6pm on Monday, forcing traffic police and city officials to close the road so workers with heavy machinery could repair it.

Witnesses claim that they saw a ten-wheel truck, laden with soil, pass through the intersection, heading towards Chaturathit Road, before the road subsided and trapped the pickup truck.

Suphamit Laithong, head of the drainage and sewerage office of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, told the media that workers used concrete slabs and two rubber sheets to cover the gap in the road, before pouring mixed concrete to seal the gap. He said the concrete has to harden before the road can be reopened.

He said that the city administration and Bangkok police agree that the road will only be reopened to traffic when it is confirmed that it is safe to do so.

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt, who visited the scene, instructed officials to find the cause of the subsidence and to help the pickup truck driver.

Meanwhile, police checked CCTV at the scene to trace the ten-wheel truck driver for questioning.
