Protesters end rally at Bangkok’s German Embassy

Thousands of protesters ended their rally in front of the German Embassy on South Sathorn Road after submitting a letter addressed to the German government stressing their call for Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha to resign and demanding a probe into HM the King’s frequent visits to Germany.

The pro-democracy demonstrators started gathering at Samyan intersection about 5pm and marched on the usually busy Rama IV Road to reach the embassy.

The protesters dispersed at around 9 pm after a group of their representatives presented a letter with embassy officials.

The letter, whose contents was later read out to the protesters, reiterated the demand for Prime Minister Prayut to resign and for a new constitution. A banner bearing the words “Reform the monarchy” was seen in the background of the protest leaders reading the statement.

The letter also asked for an investigation by German authorities into the Thai monarch’s frequent visits to Germany. HM the King has been spending a considerable amount of time each year in Germany.

The German Embassy on Monday issued a statement saying that Germany recognizes the rights to peaceful assembly of Thai people and that it was ready to receive messages addressed to its government.
