Protest against the Constitutional Court considering Pita’s shareholding case

A political group gathered in front of the Constitutional Court today (Tuesday) to protest against the Election Commission’s (EC) submission of Pita Limjaroenrat’s shareholding case to the Court.

The group, called “June 24 Democracy”, also submitted a petition to the Court’s president against the Court’s accepting for consideration whether Pita and his party’s election campaign promise to amend the lèse majesté law could be considered an attempt to overthrow the country’s democratic system of government with the King as head of state.

Somyot Prueksakasemsuk, leader of the group, expressed doubt over the EC’s real intention in the shareholding case and whether it is being neutral in its handling of the matter.

“The public may doubt whether the EC is neutral, as it has expedited the case without reason, and whether it has been politically motivated,” he said.

The EC also asked the court to order Pita to stop performing his duty as an MP, pending the Court’s decision whether to accept the case for consideration.

Concerning the lèse majesté law amendment campaign motion, Somyot said that accepting the case could be considered a violation of the public’s freedom of expression and speech.
