Prawit quits as leader of Palang Pracharath, is renominated, reassumes the post

General Prawit Wongsuwan quit as leader of the Palang Pracharath party, was renominated, uncontested and reassumed the post today (Saturday).

His sudden resignation today, which effectively dissolves the party’s executive committee, was announced by acting party leader Paibul Nititawan at the general meeting.

Paibul told party members to remain calm, assuring them that Prawit will not leave the party, adding that the general meeting will choose a new leader and the new executive committee today.

Atthakorn Sirilatthayakorn, an MP for Chachoengsao province, reportedly proposed General Prawit as the sole nominee for party leader.

An informed party source said that General Prawit’s abrupt resignation was intended to pave the way for the overhaul of the entire executive committee, particularly the replacement of the party secretary-general Santi Promphat with Thamanat Prompao, a trusted aide of General Prawit.
