Paetongtarn Shinawatra said today that the Supreme Court’s order for her father, Thaksin Shinawatra, to serve a one-year prison term marks a historic moment, as it is the first time a former prime minister has been imprisoned.
She was speaking after the Supreme Court’s Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions ruled that Thaksin’s hospital stay, from mid-August 2023 until February 2024, could not be counted as prison time served.
“It is a heavy matter, but both my father and our family remain strong. I, along with the Pheu Thai party, remain committed to working as the (parliamentary) opposition for the people,” she said.
She expressed personal concern for her father, but also pride in the many historic milestones he has achieved, including policies that have greatly benefited the people.
With tears in her eyes, Paetongtarn said the family is deeply grateful for the royal mercy shown by His Majesty the King, who commuted her father’s sentence to one year. She also thanked everyone who has offered support and expressed concern for him.
“Nonetheless, my father remains a spiritual leader [sic],” Paetongtarn added, noting that his past achievements, everything he has done for the country and his unwavering commitment to the nation are all part of his legacy. She said her father has always wanted to see the people live well and prosper.
