Former Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva announced his political comeback to Thailand’s oldest political party today, one day ahead of the party’s general assembly to elect a new leader.
If Abhisit, a former prime minister, is elected, he will replace Chalermchai Sri-on, who resigned on September 12, citing health problems.
In his Facebook post today, Abhisit said he was volunteering to serve the people as a member of the Democrat Party once again.
He also posted a group photo with several former party members, including Korn Chatikavanij, Sakolthee Phattiyakul, ML Apimongkol Sonakul, Pongsakorn Kwanmuang, and Veerapong Prapha.
Abhisit twice served as leader of the Democrat Party between 2005 and 2019.
He resigned after the party suffered a devastating election defeat in 2019 and again left the party in December 2023 following internal party problems.
After the election of the new party leader, Abhisit is expected to deliver a speech outlining his vision for the party under his leadership and his plans for reform.
