Scores of protesters gathered in front of the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) headquarters today, calling for a speedy investigation into allegations that a group of senior government officials allowed Thaksin Shinawatra to stay in a hospital instead of a prison cell.
Their leaders included significant political figures, such as Warong Dechgitvigrom, Jatuporn Prompan, Nititorn Lamlua, and Charnchai Issarasena Na Ayudhya.
They submitted a petition to a representative of the NACC, demanding that the investigation be concluded as quickly as possible and brought before a court.
The NACC recently agreed to consider a complaint, filed against the director-general of the Corrections Department, the chief doctor at the Police General Hospital and ten other officials, for allegedly allowing Thaksin to remain in the hospital for six months, instead of serving his sentence in prison, despite not having any life-threatening conditions.
In the petition, they claim that witnesses who visited Thaksin at the hospital reported that he showed no signs of illness and was not under the control of Corrections Department officials, as he should have been.
Furthermore, no medical reports were provided to justify Thaksin's transfer from the prison hospital to the Police General Hospital.
The petition concluded that the officials named had clearly abused their power to assist Thaksin, actions that undermined the credibility of the justice system.
