The opposition People’s party is demanding a straightforward investigation into the fatal accidents at construction sites on the Rama 2 elevated expressway project and accountability for human and material loss, to prevent repetitions of such accidents, said party leader Natthaphong Ruangpanyawut today.
In the past six years, multiple accidents have been occurred, resulting in over 100 fatalities and thousands of injuries, he said, adding that none of those responsible have been held accountable.
“Justice delayed is justice denied,” said the opposition leader, adding that the public want to see investigations conducted in a straightforward manner and speedy subsequent legal proceedings.
In the latest accident, last Saturday night, six people, including an engineer, were killed and about 20 other people injured when a bridge under construction near the Dao Khanong toll plaza collapsed.
Natthaphong also said that the People’s Party will push for implementation of the measures proposed by the Association of Structural Engineers of Thailand, designed to prevent future accidents at the construction sites of huge public projects.
They have proposed that, since a huge construction project involves engineers, foremen, technicians and workers, all should be required to have a license or a permit, to guarantee that they are qualified to do the job.
The association also proposed that all sub-contractors be regulated and registered and CCTV be installed at all construction sites, to ensure that, if there is an accident, it will be recorded.
