The Myanmar government has agreed to pardon and free four Thai crew members of a fishing boat, captured by Myanmar officials on September 30th last year while fishing in Myanmar’s waters, said Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra in her Facebook post today.
The skipper of the fishing vessel and his three crew were sentenced to six years and four years respectively by a court in Kawthoung, formerly Victoria Point, a border town opposite Thailand’s Ranong province.
The prime minister said she had been informed by Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa that the Myanmar government issued an order yesterday to pardon the imprisoned fishermen, as a sign of the good relationship between Myanmar and Thailand.
She thanked the Myanmar government for the decision and said she has instructed the foreign minister to arrange for the rapid and safe return of the Thais to their families.
