Dusit Thani CEO Suphajee Suthumpun is tipped to become commerce minister in the new Cabinet. She said today that the time ahead will be both challenging and crucial, as the country must keep moving forward.
“I have had the opportunity to work in many different fields, including internationally. I intend to devote all of my experience and capabilities during this short period to generate the greatest benefit (for the people),” she said.
At his Bhumjaithai party’s headquarters, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul introduced her to the media today as the designated commerce minister in his prospective Cabinet.
She added that she would work closely with her team, under the prime minister’s leadership and alongside Ekniti Nitithanprapas, the designated deputy prime minister for economic affairs, to revive Thailand’s economy within the time available.
Acknowledging the current economic challenges, Suphajee stressed her determination to deliver results, saying “We cannot do everything, but we can prioritise that which will yield the most effective results in the time we have.”
She declined to comment on the urgent priorities, saying she will wait until the royal endorsement is granted and the prime minister has outlined the broader policy direction in parliament.
Suphajee holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology and anthropology from Thammasat University and a master’s degree in business administration, specialising in international finance, from Northrop University in the United States.
She worked at IBM for more than 20 years, becoming the company’s first female general manager in Thailand, and later served as general manager of IBM ASEAN’s Global Technology Services Division.
She has also been CEO of Thaicom and, since 2016, the CEO of Dusit International.
