The Election Commission (EC) has decided to postpone the endorsement of the official result of the Bangkok gubernatorial election until tomorrow (Tuesday), pending an investigation into the unofficial winner Chadchart Sittipunt’s use of vinyl fabric in his campaign posters.
The investigation follows a complaint filed with the EC by political activist Srisuwan Janya, who has questioned whether Chadchart had a hidden agenda when he used vinyl fabric in the making of his posters and whether the fabric has been recycled into bags and aprons. The well-known frequent petitioner also accused Chadchart of “insulting the bureaucratic system”.
The election results are then expected to be announced tomorrow afternoon.
Unofficial results appear to show that Chadchart won the capital’s governorship by a landslide.
Responding to the delay, Chadchart said he is not worried about the complaint, adding that he is ready to explain to the EC if required to do so.
He also said that the delay in endorsing his election victory will not stop him visiting areas to gain first-hand knowledge about the problems in Bangkok.
He visited Rama 3 Road today, after receiving complaints about prolonged road maintenance and pot holes posing a threat to motorists.
The EC has, however, endorsed the results of the council elections in 40 out of 50 districts.
