Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra will receive his first prison visit tomorrow, after completing a mandatory five-day quarantine at Klong Prem Central Prison, said Pol Lt Col Chen Kanchanapat, deputy director general of the Corrections Department.
He said Thaksin’s close relatives and lawyer will be permitted to meet him for the first time since he began serving a one-year sentence handed down by the Supreme Court’s Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions.
The court ruled the sentence had yet to be enforced by the Corrections Department.
Chen stressed that no special arrangements have been made, adding that Thaksin will be treated like any other inmate. Visits will take place through a transparent glass partition, with no physical contact allowed.
The official said Thaksin is in good health and that his hypertension has stabilised.
As the former prime minister is over 65, he will be relocated to a section designated for elderly prisoners, at the discretion of the prison governor.
