Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha today offered his well wishes on the occasion of Loy Krathong festival to  Thai people and expressed hope that the country will be free from misfortunes and sufferings.

Accompanied by his wife, Mrs Naraporn, cabinet members of officials, the prime minister floated a krathong in Klong Padung Krung Kasem in front of the Government House  as part of the tradition to celebrate the festival.

The Loy Krathong festival is celebrated across the country with celebrants flocking to natural waterways to float their krathong which are mostly made of banana trunks, bread or other biodegradable materials and decorated with flowers, incense sticks and candles.

Krathong made of foam has been discouraged as they are seen as environment unfriendly.

Earlier in the day, Gen Prayut visited areas in Bangkapi where he joined a flag-raising at a school before taking a boat trip to inspect progress in the development of the famous Klong Saensaeb and visit a mosque and a market in Minburi area.   Prayut took the occasion to defended his government’s aid package for the poor approved by the Cabinet on Tuesday but criticized by politicians as a being a gimmick to woo votes ahead of the upcoming election.
