Pheu Thai MPs nominate Prachachat party leader as alternative candidate for House speakership

The Pheu Thai party is set to nominate Prachachat party leader Wan Muhamad Noor Matha as its candidate for the House speakership, in an attempt to resolve the conflict with the Move Forward party over the post.

The choice of the Prachachat party leader, who is considered to be impartial, was agreed upon by the Pheu Thai MPs at a meeting today (Monday), but it is yet to be approved by the party’s executive committee.

Pheu Thai party-list MP Suriya Juangroongruangkit told the media after the meeting that he expects Wan’s nomination to be finalised tonight by the party’s executive committee, adding that the party has already contacted Wan about his proposed nomination.

It is not known yet whether the Move Forward party will accept the Pheu Thai party’s proposal.

Padipat Suntiphada, Move Forward constituency MP for Phitsanuloke, has been tipped as the party’s candidate for the speakership.

Meanwhile, United Thai Nation Secretary-General Akanat Promphan said that the party will meet tonight to decide how to vote tomorrow on the House speakership.

He said the party has made its position clear on this matter and will not vote for a prime ministerial candidate or House speakership candidate from any party which advocates amendment of the lèse majesté law.

He also said that is remains unclear, at this stage, whether parties in the current administration will propose any candidate or the House speakership.
