Opposition seeks injunction against transport minister contesting election

Thailand’s opposition MPs are gathering signatures on a petition to the Constitution Court to strip Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob of his right to contest the general election.

Move Forward MP Pakornwut Udompipatskul said today (Monday) that MPs of several opposition parties agree with the move.

He said that the previous petition to the court only sought an order to strip Saksayam of his political post, for allegedly not declaring his stake in a business enterprise.

The court ordered Saksayam to cease performing his duty as a minister, when it decided to accept the original petition for consideration.

Pakornwut said that the new move is a separate issue and can be undertaken by opposition MPs, in accordance with Section 144 of the Constitution.

Supachai Jaisamut, the registrar of the Bhumjaithai Party, explained that the case against Saksayam, pending in the Constitutional Court, has nothing to do with the party, but concerns Saksayam only in his capacity as transport minister.

Saksayam has the right to defend himself before the court within 15 days.
