ONCB seize more assets from Senator Upakit

The Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) has impounded more assets from the house of Senator Upakit Pachariyangkun, suspecting that they might have been acquired with laundered revenues from drug trafficking.

Pol Lt-Gen Phanurat Lukboon, secretary-general of the ONCB, said today that their officials searched the senator’s house in Bangkok’s Dusit district looking for assets which could be linked to drug trafficking, after additional charges of conspiracy and abetting drug trafficking activities were filed against the senator.

He said that Senator Upakit was very cooperative with the police during the search of the house and said he is quite prepared to defend himself against the charges in court.

Five luxury cars, three handguns, wristwatches and numerous documents were seized by the officials for detailed examination.

Previously, the ONCB seized assets worth about 400 million baht from the senator, as part of the same investigation.

Senator Upakit came under media scrutiny after the arrest of his Myanmar business partner, Tun Min Latt, in Bangkok in September last year on charges of drug trafficking and money laundering.  His son-in-law, Dean Young Gultula, was also arrested.
