Official Loy Krathong festivities to be held at Ong Ang Canal and across Bangkok

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) will hold Loy Krathong festivities along the famous Ong Ang Canal from November 6th through 8th and at the foot of the Rama 8 Bridge in Bang Phlad district on November 8th from 5pm to 10pm. Similar festivities will be held at public parks across the city by the district offices on the night of November 8th, Loy Krathong Day.

Deputy Bangkok Governor Sanon Wangsrangboon said that a replica of an old market will be built at the Rama 8 site, to generate an atmosphere of the old days, where products from the capital’s 50 districts will on sale. The event will also feature cultural and art shows.

The three-day festival along the Ong Ang Canal will also feature cultural shows, open-air movie screenings and music.

Sanon said that police and city officials will be on duty at all the locations to ensure safety.  Fireworks, firecrackers and sky lanterns will not be allowed, he said, adding that each family will be encouraged to use just one “krathong” (traditional floating basket) to protect the environment.

During the festival, members of the public can call hotline numbers 199 and 1555 if they are in need of help.

As for next year, Sanon said that the city administration plans to organise a monthly festival throughout the year, under the theme of “Colourful Bangkok”, to promote tourism.
