Nun arrested for alleged involvement in a Ponzi investment scheme

An elderly nun has been arrested by police at a convent in Pak Chong district of Thailand’s north-eastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima for alleged involvement in a Ponzi-like scheme, which invited members of the public to invest in a cloud storage company with promises of high returns.

Officers from the Police Cyber Task Force (PCTF) arrested the 69-year-old, only identified as “Pattana”, on fraud charges and for violation of the computer crime law.

According to the PCTF, 3,531 people have filed complaints with the police, claiming that they had been cheated out of over 1.3 billion baht of investments in the Concept Series Company, offering cloud storage services, with promises of high returns, but the company had defaulted on repayments of their investments and the promised gains.

Police claim that Pattana was a board member of the company and she had evaded arrest after a warrant had been issued by a court last year.

Pattana claimed, however, that she was not a board member of the company and had nothing to do with it.  She has been taken to Mae Tha police station for detention and questioning.
