Nok Air has suspended all flights today (Sunday) between Bangkok and Chiang Rai province after one of its planes skidded off the runway at Mae Fah Luang-Chiang Rai international airport on Saturday night.

After the incident, the airport has closed the runway from 6am until 10pm today.

The airline said, in a statement issued late last night, that the Boeing 737-800 operating flight DD108 left Bangkok’s Don Mueang Airport at 8.03pm with 164 passengers and six crew on board.

The plane arrived at Mae Fah Luang-Chiang Rai international airport at 9.06pm in heavy rain and, as it was taxiing along the runway towards its parking position on the apron, it skidded off the runway.

The company said, however, that the pilot managed to park the plane safely and all the passengers and crew were safely ushered into the passenger terminal.

The company also said that its ground staff had taken care of all the passengers, provided them with snacks and drinks while they were at the airport and arranged accommodation for passengers who required it.

The cause of the accident is being investigated, according to the statement.

The company said that passengers affected by the flight cancellations today can change their flights at no additional cost or can request a refund.
