Nine day holiday for Songkran ditched by PM

The idea of a nine day holiday over the Songkran festival this year, to promote domestic tourism following a sharp decline in tourist arrivals, especially from China, appears to have been nipped in the bud by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha.

The Prime Minister said today that he personally does not agree with the idea because he doesn’t think it will help promote tourism and the five day holiday, from April 11th to April 15th, is long enough for the celebrations.

April 16th and 17th are Thursday and Friday and, if they were to be declared special holidays, the entire holiday period during Songkran would be nine consecutive days.

The idea was not raised for discussion during today’s cabinet meeting.
