A flash flood struck Ban Huay Hom in Mae Tha District of Lamphun province in the middle of last night, in which two people died, two people went missing and causing damage to eight residences.
The Ruamjai Lamphun rescue team received reports of a flood sweeping away people’s homes and officials immediately began search operations in the area, but temporarily suspended efforts at 3am due to strong currents and continuous heavy rain.
Lamphun Governor Wiwat Inthawong joined forces with local administrative officials, the Doi Pha Wiang Wildlife Sanctuary team and village residents to assist in recovery and support efforts for those affected by the flood. Many residents remain frightened, as a flash flood rarely occurs during a period of drought.
The Department of Mineral Resources has issued a warning of possible landslides and flash floods for April 14 and 15, urging local officials to monitor the amount of rainfall continuously. Northern provinces likely to be affected include Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Mae Hong Son, Lamphun, Lampang, Nan, Phrae, Sukhothai and Uttaradit.
People in these provinces are also advised to monitor weather updates closely, especially in areas experiencing heavy rain. If accumulated rainfall exceeds 100mm in 24 hours, belongings should be moved to higher ground.
