A tropical depression is moving across the South China Sea towards Vietnam and is expected to make landfall this Friday and Saturday. It will then move into the northeastern region, according to the Meteorological Department.
The tropical depression, with wind speeds of 56kph at its centre, is intensifying into a tropical storm as it moves westward at a speed of 3kph. On making landfall in central Vietnam it will weaken again into a tropical depression as it moves into north-eastern Thailand.
Somkuan Tonjan, director of the weather forecast division of the Meteorological Department, said today that this may be the first tropical depression to hit Thailand this year.
He said that the worst-impacted provinces in Thailand are expected to be Nakhon Phanom, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan and Udon Thani, said Somkuan.
The depression will bring heavy rain to the north, northeast, east and south, as well as in and around Bangkok, from Friday through Monday.
