Following a tragic fire in a Chatuchak pub that claimed 33 lives last Sunday, Bangkok authorities launched a sweeping safety crackdown. Three entertainment venues have been shut down after failing to meet critical safety and licensing standards during citywide inspections.
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) announced the closures on Thursday, noting that the ongoing inspections are heavily focused on evaluating fire prevention readiness, emergency response capabilities and building usage compliance under the Building Control Act of 1979.
In the Rama I area of Pathum Wan district, officials ordered the immediate temporary closure of a venue operating as a live music pub without the required license. Inspectors also discovered a complete lack of emergency exit signs and found existing emergency exits blocked.
In the Charan Sanitwong area of Bangkok Noi district, another venue was forced to close. It was hosting live music and karaoke without a license, posing serious potential risks to patrons and neighbors.
In the Phetchaburi area of Ratchathewi, a music performance venue was ordered to cease operations after the owner ignored previous official warnings. The operator has been given a final deadline of seven days to fully close the venue down.
The intensified safety campaign comes in the immediate wake of the devastating fire at Rong Beer Na Ladprao on Sunday night, which has prompted City Hall to enforce safety regulations strictly across all of Bangkok's nightlife zones.
