Thailand’s new coronavirus infections fell to just 38 today, from yesterday’s 51, apparently as a result of the nationwide night-time curfew, which began on April 3rd.
CCSA spokesman Dr. Taweesin Visanuyothin expressed relief at the drop in numbers, but he cautioned that the decline is not an excuse to relax, citing the case of an elderly woman in South Korea who became a major source of contagion due to complacency.
All existing preventive measures must be maintained, he said.
The 38 new cases bring total infections in Thailand to 2,258, with 1,407 still in hospital. Total recoveries are 824 and the death toll increased by 1 today to 27.
The new fatality was a 54-year old Thai man, with no pre-existing conditions, who had visited an entertainment venue in Bangkok’s Thonglor area. He fell ill on March 23rd with breathing difficulties and had to be put on a respirator in hospital, where he was diagnosed with a severe lung infection. He died yesterday.
At 1,201 to date, Bangkok still has had the most infections.
New cases upcountry have also slowed to under 100 per day. Three new cases were reported in Chon Buri province and three in Phuket today.
New infections among Thais returning from abroad during the past two weeks are still slowly rising, said Dr. Taweesin, as he stressed the need to delay returning to Thailand.
Having seen the graphs of infections in Bangkok, which show a steady decline in the rate of new infections, Dr. Taweesin said he believes that no harsher control measures will be needed for now.
