The support of Thai football fans helped the national football team win the King’s Cup 2024 last night, defeating Syria 2-1 in Songkhla province, said Japanese head coach Matsatada Ishii.
Thailand narrowly won after Ekanit Panya scored in the 44th minute of the first half. In the second half, Syria’s Ezequiel Naim Ham equalised in the 53rd minute, before the Thai team’s captain Chanathip Songkrasin scored the winning goal in injury time (90+1).
This victory was crucial for the national football team, marking it their first win since 2017 and the 16th overall.
For Ishii, 57, it was his first cup win since taking over as head coach in January this year.
“No matter whether the fans came to cheer us in the stadium or watched on television, they played an important role in our excellent performance. I would like to thank them all for our victory,” he said.
He also thanked Chanathip for boosting the team's morale and encouraging the players during practice and play.

Meanwhile, Chanathip stated that his Man of the Match award was not as important as the team’s victory. He mentioned that, as a senior member of the team, he will act as a bridge to connect with the younger generation.
He also expressed gratitude to the fans in Songkhla for their support.
