People living in riverside communities in Bangkok, Samut Prakan, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Samut Sakhon, Nakhon Pathom and Samut Songkhram are being advised to brace for flooding, caused by a combination of river overflows and high tides, from today until Friday.
According to the Royal Irrigation Department, the amount of water being discharged through the Chao Phraya dam in Chainat province has been increased to 1,550m3/s, following recent heavy rainfall upstream.
To ease pressure on the dam, it is necessary to release an increased volume of water and this will cause the water level in the Pongpeng Canal in Ang Thong, the Bang Ban Canal in Ayutthaya and the Noi River to rise by 10-20cm, depending on the terrain.
Compounded by high tides, the department says that there is a possibility that areas of Bangkok which are not protected by flood walls and surrounding provinces may see flooding this week.
Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department reports that tropical storm Trami is expected to pass across Luzon in the Philippines tomorrow and Friday before making landfall in Vietnam this weekend.
The storm may impact Thailand’s north-eastern region this weekend, said the department.
