Traffic flow on Ladprao Road, in front of a Bang Kapi department store, has resumed after the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) completed emergency repairs to the main road damage by a sinkhole that forced the closure of part of the outbound carriageway.
The sinkhole measured about 3 by 4 metres and was about 1.5 metres deep.
Workers pumped out water and repaired the damaged area by filling the cavity with a compacted sand-cement mixture to reinforce the structure before applying quick-drying concrete and resurfacing the road.
Repairs were completed at around 1am and the section was reopened to traffic at 5.30am after equipment had been removed from the site.
Sombat, a construction supervisor, said that underground cable conduits run beneath the road and recent rainfall may have seeped along the ducts, eroding the soil and creating a void, into which the road eventually collapsed.
He added that a similar incident occurred at the same location in 2024 and that there are about 55 underground utility conduit chambers beneath Ladprao Road between the Ratchadapisek and Bang Kapi intersections.
Previous scans detected underground cavities near five of the chambers, all of which have since been repaired.
He said that there are plans to conduct another round of inspections of underground utility ducts along Ladprao Road and other roads near mass transit construction routes to ensure public safety.
