Anti-gambling groups gathered near Government House in Bangkok today, to protest against the government’s planned entertainment complex project, claiming that it will ruin the country.
Phichit Chaimongkhon, leader of one of the groups, said that they will campaign until the project is cancelled, after learning that it will be submitted to the cabinet for approval on March 11th, after the Council of State has reviewed the new legislation required for the project to happen.
He said that the groups also oppose the legalisation of online gambling, as proposed by the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society.
Today’s protesters cried foul over the police using cargo containers to block their access to Government House, claiming that they had already sought permission from them to stage a rally, which remained peaceful throughout.
Phichit has vowed to stage a marathon protest if the cabinet approves the entertainment complex project at its March 11th meeting.
The government, meanwhile, claims that casinos will account for just 10% of the total investment in the complex.
