An American law lecturer, at the Faculty of Social Science of Naresuan University, who is facing a lèse majesté charge, was denied bail today by the Phitsanuloke provincial court.
Paul Chambers, PhD, has been accused by the Third Army Region of lèse majesté and violating the Computer Crimes Act. An arrest warrant was issued for him on Monday.
He was escorted to the Phitsanuloke Provincial Court to seek extension of his detention, pending further investigation. Police in charge of the case objected to the granting of bail.
After deliberating, the court rejected his bail application on the grounds that the accused is a foreign national and the alleged offence carries significant penalties.
The American lecturer has the right to appeal the court’s ruling.
