Police in Pattaya executed a late-night sweep targeting public prostitution along the city's main beach promenade last night, ahead of the arrival of around 5,000 US military personnel scheduled to visit the area this week.
The joint operation involved over 20 officers from Pattaya City Police Station, special operations units, tourist police, immigration police and officials from the Chon Buri Provincial Office of Social Development and Human Security.
Teams raided target zones along Pattaya Beach Road, Second Road and other high-risk public spaces across the resort city.
Authorities apprehended 25 individuals suspected of soliciting in public spaces, including 18 Thais, five Laotians and two Ugandans.
Pol. Lt. Col Siriwat Khatchamart, deputy superintendent for suppression at Pattaya City Police Station, stated that the operation was part of standard law enforcement efforts to maintain public order and safety for both residents and visitors.
He emphasised that the checks would not be a one-off event, with authorities increasing both the frequency and intensity of patrols along beach zones and nightlife areas to prevent human trafficking, child exploitation and begging.
The increased enforcement comes as Pattaya prepares for the arrival of the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier and its strike group, carrying approximately 5,000 US sailors and Marines.
The vessels are scheduled to dock at nearby Laem Chabang Port from Sept 2 to 6 for crew rest and recuperation, following an extended deployment, before returning to their home port in San Diego.
