A male motorist succumbed to his injuries in hospital after a cement block reportedly fell from an elevated expressway construction site on Rama II Road onto his pickup’s windscreen in Samut Sakhon province yesterday.
The victim, identified only as “Amnart”, suffered internal organ damage and was pronounced dead after undergoing emergency surgery, said Nattapong Sumanotham, Samut Sakhon MP of the People’s Party, today.
The motorist had told EMTs yesterday that he was driving in the outbound lane of Rama II Road, towards Samut Sakhon, when a large cement block suddenly landed on his vehicle's windscreen. He was rushed to hospital.
Yesterday, Samut Sakhon Governor Naris Niramai visited Amnart in hospital, while Thanasarn Sitthapa, of the Samut Sakhon Highways District, met with his wife, apologised for the incident and pledged to take responsibility for the medical expenses incurred.
Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit said yesterday that an initial investigation into the incident revealed that the cement blocks in question had likely fallen from an old flyover, due to its deteriorated condition, and not form the construction site.
