The Football Association of Thailand (FA Thailand) has decided to part ways with Masatada Ishii, head coach of the Thailand national football team, citing differences in coaching philosophy and direction following a technical evaluation.
The decision comes despite Thailand being in a strong position to advances, with nine points from four matches in the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers.
According to the association’s statement, the decision to terminate Ishii’s contract was based on a review conducted by its technical committee.
While the team’s recent form was encouraging, the committee concluded that Ishii’s coaching techniques did not go along with the long-term vision of the association.
The final decision was made during a meeting of executive members today, held at FA Thailand’s headquarters and chaired by the Vice President of the association, Charnwit Polcheewin.
Ishii was appointed head coach in December 2023 and oversaw 30 matches during his tenure, winning 16, a 53% win rate.
In the official announcement, the association thanked Ishii, 58, and his coaching staff for their dedication and efforts, and extended their best wishes for their future careers.
The technical committee will begin the selection process for a new head coach immediately, to ensure a smooth transition ahead of the upcoming FIFA international window in November.
Thailand is scheduled to host Singapore in a friendly on November 13, followed by a key qualifier against Sri Lanka on November 18 on the fifth match day of the Asian Cup 2027 qualification round.
