A village assistant chief, suspected of drunk driving and causing a crash that killed a two-year-old child and severely injured the mother in Lampang province, failed to meet with district officials yesterday, claiming sudden illness and severe stress.
Muang Lampang District Chief Thanarat Saithep revealed on June 11 that associates of the suspect, 57-year-old ‘Dech’, had requested a postponement of his disciplinary interrogation. Despite the delay, Thanarat stated that he has ordered an inquiry team to track down the suspect and to question him at his home or in any feasible location within the next 48 hours.
The findings will be fast-tracked to the provincial governor to determine whether Dech will be summarily dismissed from his administrative post.
The fatal incident occurred when Dech allegedly drove under the influence, striking the toddler and his mother. A subsequent blood test revealed an alcohol concentration of 104 mg%, more than double the legal limit.
While the suspect has yet to be formally summoned by police, Muang Lampang investigators are currently gathering evidence and waiting to interview the victim's mother, who remains in hospital in serious condition with her left leg broken in two places.
Police have stated that the legal process is being handled with utmost care to ensure justice for both sides.
Dech could face multiple charges, including driving under the influence of alcohol causing death and severe injury, as well as property damage.
