A total of 270 Indian nationals who recently escaped from Myanmar’s KK Park scam centre into Thailand’s Mae Sot district have been declared persona non grata and will be deported to India, said Pol Lt Gen Panumas Boonyalak, Commissioner of the Immigration Bureau.
He said that the 244 men and 26 women have been questioned by Thai immigration officers, to determine whether they went to Myanmar voluntarily to work in call centres or were forced to against their will.
He also said that, after the questioning, the officers were convinced that all of them were voluntary scammers. They were charged and convicted for illegal entry and are now waiting to be repatriated in an Indian government military transport plane.
More than 1,500 foreigners of various nationalities, most of them Indians, fled KK Park in Myawaddy township into Mae Sot district last month, to escape the bombardment of the scam centre by Myanmar troops and their renegade Karen force.
